Pet Boarding in Kolkata: Finding Trusted Home Hosts Across the City
By Osho Chawla, Founder of Zauffy
Kolkata has always been a city of animal lovers. From the neighbourhood para dogs that everyone feeds to the well-loved pets in South Kolkata's old houses, the city has a relationship with animals that runs deeper than trends. But Kolkata's pet care infrastructure hasn't evolved at the same pace as cities like Bangalore or Mumbai. When you need to travel and can't take your dog or cat along, the options are limited: a handful of kennels on the outskirts, a favour from a relative, or an anxious WhatsApp arrangement with an acquaintance. Home boarding is changing that equation.
The Boarding Landscape in Kolkata
Traditional kennels in Kolkata are few and mostly located in the fringes of the city: beyond EM Bypass towards Sonarpur, near the airport in Dum Dum, or in the rural pockets beyond Salt Lake Sector V. The distance alone is a deterrent for many pet parents. A round trip from South Kolkata or central areas like Park Street can eat up 2 to 3 hours.
The facilities themselves are a mixed bag. Kolkata's climate, hot and humid for most of the year, makes ventilation and cooling critical. Not all kennels invest adequately in this. Some are clean and well-managed farms with outdoor space. Others are cramped, poorly ventilated, and understaffed. For a pet that has spent its life in a Kolkata flat with ceiling fans and the occasional AC, a kennel without proper cooling during May can be dangerous.
The boarding shortage is particularly acute during Durga Puja. The city empties out as families travel, and the few available facilities fill up weeks in advance. This is precisely when demand peaks and supply runs out.
Why Home Boarding Works in Kolkata
Kolkata's housing structure is surprisingly well-suited to home boarding. Unlike Mumbai's compact flats, Kolkata offers considerably more space per square foot. The city still has a significant stock of independent houses, especially in South Kolkata neighbourhoods like Ballygunge, Gariahat, Jadavpur, Dhakuria, and Lake Gardens. These houses often have ground-floor access, small courtyards, and the kind of spacious layouts that make hosting a pet comfortable.
Even Kolkata's apartment living tends to be more generous than other metros. A 2BHK in Salt Lake or New Town is noticeably larger than its equivalent in Bandra or Indiranagar. Many apartment complexes in New Town, Rajarhat, and Salt Lake have internal parks, walking paths, and open spaces.
Home boarding gives your pet something no kennel can: normalcy. The familiar rhythm of a household. Meals at regular times. Someone on the sofa while your dog naps. The sounds of cooking, conversation, and daily life. For pets that are already stressed by their owner's absence, maintaining as much routine as possible is the best thing you can do for them.
The proximity advantage matters in Kolkata especially. The city's traffic, while not as infamous as Mumbai's or Bangalore's, can still be unpredictable, particularly around Howrah Bridge, the EM Bypass junctions, and the Park Circus connector. A host in your own neighbourhood means a 10-minute taxi ride for drop-off, not an hour-long journey to the outskirts.
What to Look for in a Kolkata Host
Cooling and ventilation. Kolkata's combination of heat and humidity is punishing from March through October. Unlike Delhi's dry heat, Kolkata's muggy conditions make even 33 degrees feel oppressive. AC or at minimum strong cross-ventilation with ceiling fans is essential. Ask specifically about cooling arrangements during afternoon hours. The AVMA's pet care resources offer good guidance on heat-related risks for different breeds.
Floor level and access. Kolkata still has many walk-up buildings without elevators, especially in South Kolkata's older neighbourhoods. A host on the 4th floor of a walk-up means carrying your dog up and down stairs for every bathroom break. Ground-floor or first-floor hosts are significantly more practical, especially for senior dogs or large breeds.
Outdoor space. Dogs need walks, but Kolkata doesn't have the abundance of dog parks that newer cities offer. Hosts with direct ground-floor access, a courtyard, or proximity to a maidan (open ground) have a clear advantage. The Rabindra Sarobar Lake area, Deshapriya Park, and the Salt Lake Central Park are popular walking spots, and hosts near these areas can offer excellent routines.
Resident pets. Many Kolkata pet owners have adopted street dogs, and these dogs can be wonderful companions for boarders. But compatibility matters. Ask about the resident pet's size, energy, and how they handle new animals in their space.
Mosquito management. Kolkata's mosquito situation is serious, particularly during and after monsoon. Mosquitoes carry heartworm, which is a real risk for dogs. Ask whether the host uses pet-safe repellents, has netted windows, or takes other precautions. Ensure your pet's preventive treatments are current before boarding.
Kolkata-Specific Considerations
The heat and humidity (March to October). This is Kolkata's defining climate challenge. The city rarely gets dry heat. Instead, it's a sustained, energy-sapping combination of 35 to 40 degree temperatures and 80 to 95% humidity. Pets overheat faster in high humidity because panting (their primary cooling mechanism) is less effective when the air is already saturated with moisture. Walks must happen early morning (before 7 AM) and after sunset. Midday outdoor time should be avoided entirely from April through September.
Monsoon and flooding (June to September). Kolkata's monsoon is significant. Heavy rain regularly waterloggs parts of the city, especially in areas like Behala, parts of Dum Dum, Jadavpur near the canal, and low-lying pockets of central Kolkata. During major rain events, streets can be submerged for hours. This affects walk schedules and general mobility. Hosts in elevated areas or well-drained neighbourhoods (New Town, Salt Lake) handle monsoon better. Ask about the host's specific flood history.
Durga Puja (September/October). This is both the busiest boarding period and the trickiest for pet care. The city explodes with pandals, loudspeakers, firecrackers, and crowds. Noise-sensitive pets need hosts who understand how to manage this: keeping curtains drawn, playing calming music, avoiding walks during peak pandal hours, and providing safe indoor spaces. If your pet is particularly anxious around loud noises, discuss this explicitly with your host. The celebrations last 5 to 7 days, and the sound levels are intense, especially in central and south Kolkata neighbourhoods.
Diwali and Kali Puja. Similar noise concerns apply. Firecrackers in Kolkata during Kali Puja are among the most intense in any Indian city. Hosts experienced with managing anxious pets during these festivals are invaluable.
Nor'westers (April to June). Kolkata's dramatic pre-monsoon thunderstorms, called Kal Baisakhis or nor'westers, bring sudden violent winds, lightning, and heavy rain. They typically last 30 to 60 minutes but can be terrifying for noise-sensitive pets. Hosts should have experience managing pets through these sudden storms.
Transport logistics. If you're flying out of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Dum Dum, hosts in Salt Lake, New Town, or the EM Bypass corridor save you significant travel time compared to hosts in South Kolkata. Kolkata's Metro connectivity is improving but doesn't carry pets, so you'll be relying on taxis or autos for drop-off.
Areas With the Most Hosts
Kolkata's layout follows a rough north-south axis with distinct neighbourhood characters.
Salt Lake City (Bidhannagar). Planned township with wide roads, organized sectors, and excellent green spaces. Salt Lake Central Park is one of the best urban walking spots in Kolkata. Housing is a mix of government quarters and private apartments, generally spacious. Well-connected to the airport and relatively flood-resistant due to higher elevation. Strong host community.
New Town (Rajarhat). Kolkata's newest planned area. Modern apartments and gated communities with good amenities. Eco Park is nearby for longer walks. Infrastructure is newer and better maintained than older parts of the city. Growing pet parent and host population. Best flood management in the city.
Ballygunge and Gariahat. South Kolkata's established residential heart. Old houses with character, some converted into multi-family homes. Tree-lined streets and proximity to Rabindra Sarobar Lake and Deshapriya Park. Hosts here are often longtime pet owners with genuine experience. Pricing may reflect the premium location.
Jadavpur and Dhakuria. Adjacent to Ballygunge but more affordable. A mix of independent houses and apartments. Good residential character. Proximity to Rabindra Sarobar and Jadavpur University campus (good walking area). Some flood-prone pockets near the canal.
Lake Gardens and Jodhpur Park. Quiet, residential, and green. Southern Lake Gardens borders the lake area, making morning walks pleasant. A mix of old bungalows and newer apartments. Calm environment suitable for anxious pets.
Alipore and Bhowanipore. Central Kolkata's most upscale residential areas. The Zoological Garden and Horticultural Garden are nearby. Old bungalows and newer apartments. Hosts here tend to have more space and established pet care routines.
Garia and Narendrapur. Southern Kolkata, more suburban in feel. More affordable, with a mix of independent houses and apartment complexes. Slightly farther from the city centre but well-connected via the Metro. Growing host presence with competitive pricing.
EM Bypass corridor. The arterial road connecting South Kolkata to Salt Lake, with multiple residential developments along its length. Science City area, Ruby, and Anandapur have modern apartments with decent amenities. Good balance of connectivity and residential calm.
How Zauffy Verification Works
Every host on Zauffy goes through a verification process before they can accept bookings. This includes Aadhaar-based identity verification and a review of their home environment. Once active, hosts receive reviews from pet parents after each stay, so you can read real experiences from people in your area.
During a stay, hosts share photo updates taken through the in-app camera. These updates are timestamped, so you can see your pet in the host's actual home rather than receiving a vague "all good" text message. For pet parents who are used to the anxiety of dropping their dog at a kennel and hearing nothing for days, this level of transparency changes the experience entirely. You can read reviews from other pet parents before booking to see what the experience is like.
What Does It Cost?
Home boarding in Kolkata through Zauffy starts from Rs 400 per day. Pricing varies by area, host experience, and the size of your pet. Hosts in Ballygunge, Alipore, and Salt Lake tend to charge more, while Garia, New Town, and Jadavpur offer more competitive rates. Multi-day stays often work out to better daily rates, and you can compare hosts side by side on the platform before booking.
Tips for First-Time Boarding in Kolkata
Book early for Puja season. If you're travelling during Durga Puja (usually late September or early October), start looking for a host at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance. This is the most competitive period for pet boarding in Kolkata.
Discuss festival noise plans. Whether it's Puja, Kali Puja, or Diwali, ask your host how they manage noise-sensitive pets. A good host will have a specific routine: closed windows, background music, calm indoor spaces, and adjusted walk timings.
Share your vet's details. Make sure your host knows your regular vet and has the number for the nearest emergency clinic. Areas like Ballygunge, Salt Lake, and Alipore have good vet access. More peripheral areas might be further from 24-hour clinics.
Pack familiar comfort items. Your pet's favourite blanket, a well-loved toy, or a piece of your clothing can ease the transition. This is especially important for first-time boarders who haven't been away from their family before.
